When George Perrin rang me up to ask if I’d like to be involved in Paines Plough’s COME TO WHERE I’M FROM season I knew immediately what I wanted to write about. I wanted to write about ‘our’ place, the place where I lived for the first seventeen years of my life and which continues to influence my work today – Armson Road, Exhall, near Coventry.
Born in Nuneaton, I grew up on a 1950’s council estate just over four miles North of Coventry. Where, I was privileged to live amongst the most amazingly varied and unforgettable bunch of people – imagine a mix of The Royale Family, Phoenix Nights, The League of Gentlemen and Shameless.
As it’s such a short play I’m concentrating on ‘our’ house and the events surrounding returning the key to the Council after 56 years worth of memories (apparently the average time people live in a house today is seven years).
So, if you find yourself in the Midlands on Wednesday 14th July come on over to the Belgrade Theatre (B2) and along with
Wish I could make it! Wishing you the best of luckx
My memories of Armson Road are of dodgy 70s and 80s wall-paper and carpets, and the ever-present whiff of tea and toast!
